Everyone was elated when Sony became the last studio to back DRM-free music. But it isn’t really, instead they are forcing consumers to visit a store to get a download card for albums, a very limited number of albums at this point(37).
Whats the point of that? If I have to go to a store to get a card to buy music, then why shouldn’t I just go to the same store and buy the CD and then rip it? The whole point of downloadable DRM free music is that its convenient, this is simply not. Sony after making such strives with their Blu-Ray backing by most of the major studios has continued to be stupid when it comes to DRM with music.
Even if Best Buy, Target, and Fred’s will be offering the cards, with Winn-Dixie, Coconuts, FYE, Spec’s ad Wherehouse following as is being reported this is still simply unacceptable.
Its as if Sony is setting this up to fail so they can justify going back to DRM laden music and decry DRM-free as not working.
