I’ve already blogged a couple times about Presidential endorsements(specifically of Mike Huckabee), and with such a heated campaigns going on in both the Republican and the Democratic party for Presidential nominations, its a topic that gets a fair bit of attention. There are serious nomination sites out there, like the one run by the Washington Post which tracks Presidential endorsements by state legislators, Senators, Congressmen and state wide officials(currently in Iowa, Michigan, Nevada, New Hampshire, and South Carolina), and the one run by Progressive Public Affairs which tracks every state, but only covers Congressmen, Senators, mayors of large cities and state wide officials. The Race 4 2008 weblog has a great section on endorsements, with all the latest news, including newspaper endorsements, and breaks the candidate endorsements by tier, as in this post. The list goes on and on, including Roll Call, and many others.
What all of these websites do is great, they don’t catalog the funniest and perhaps most interesting of all endorsements, the celebrity ones. While some things are made a huge deal of, like Oprah’s endorsement of Barack Obama, and Chuck Norris’ endorsement of Mike Huckabee(here and elsewhere). Some of the most interesting nomnations come from the D-List. Newsweek recently ran a story on on this very subject.
The complete list on their story is as follows:
Hillary Clinton: Marla Maples(Donald Trump’s ex), Jenna Jameson, Jerry Springer;
John Edwards: Harry Belafonte, James Denton;
Rudy Giuliani: Ben Stein, John O’Hurley(J. Peterman on Seinfeld);
Mike Huckabee: Ted Nugent, Ric Flair;
Dennis Kucinich: Larry Flynt;
Barack Obama: Gene Wilder;
Mitt Romney: Donny and Marie Osmond, Ann Coulter;
Fred Thompson: Pat Sajak.
Overall its a pretty interesting list, full of names you know, but never hear much about anymore. One blogger has said in a post that if you haven’t gotten celebrity endorsements at this point, they might as well throw in the towel. He states, “Slowly, slowly, ever since Reagan became president, America has been drifting into a Hollywood mindset, equating the ability to lead a nation with the ability to open a movie, electing presidents the same way they become fans of movie stars.”
I don’t agree, I don’t think its gotten that bad, and celebrity endorsement, in my book, make for an interesting read.

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackI’m glad you disagree with our statement over at The Spewker, although, for the record, the blog is penned by women. The “throw in the towel” comment was tongue in cheek, a lament, really. Americans should research the candidates, their voting records, their list of supporters, and whatever film of them exists instead of relying upon celebrity endorsements and/or evening news sound bytes. If they would, we could get a really great president in 2008. Crossing my fingers…
